The Cologne municipal archive, often simply referred to as Stadtarchiv or Historisches Archiv, is officially known as Historisches Archiv der Stadt Köln or, since January 2023, Historisches Archiv mit Rheinischem Bildarchiv.
Note that part of the holdings, including several canon law manuscripts, were assigned new shelfmarks in 1994 and that for these manuscripts it is necessary to cite them not only by shelfmark but also by fond (Bestand) as the same shelfmarks are used in several fonds. For example, Köln, Historisches Archiv, *W 199 (or "W.Kl. fol. 199") is now Köln, Historisches Archiv, Bestand 7010, 199.
In March 2009, the archive building was largely destroyed in a major accident. Many documents have been destroyed, the fate of many others is still unknown. Manuscripts held by the Historisches Archiv should be presumed lost unless their survival has been confirmed by the archive or post-2009 scholarship. A new building was opened in 2021, but the restoration of the damaged documents will go on for the foreseeable future.
