Carpentras, BM, 39, is a copy of the Registrum Gregorii containing 82+290 letters according to CGM.

The 1862 catalogue (Lambert, Catalogue vol. 1 p. 29) gives a summary description:

40. S. Gregorii papæ I, cognomine Magni, Epistolæ. Gr. in-fol. de 239 f. rel. v. Manquent le premier feuillet et les deux ou trois derniers. Ce manuscrit est du XIV^e ou du XV^e siècle. Les titres sont en rouge et les initiales enluminées. Toutes ces lettres ont été publiées dans les dernières éditions.

The 1885 CGM describes the contents as follows:

Fol. 2. Recueil de 82 lettres de l'indiction 9 ; manque le début de la première, adressée aux évéques de Sicile, qui commence ici par : « ... [dia]cono sedis nostre, intra provinciam Siciliam... » — La deuxième lettre « Justino, pretori Sicilię. . . » commence au même fol. : « Quod lingua loquitur... » C'est le livre I^er des lettres publiées dans les Œuvres de S. Grégoire, éd. de Paris, 1705, t. II, col. 485. — Fol. 30. Livre II, comprenant 104 lettres des indictions 10 et 11. (Ibid., col. 569.) — Fol. 60 v°. Livre III, comprenant 204 lettres des indictions 12 à 15. (Ibid., col. 681.) — Fol. 133 v°. Lettre de S. Grégoire aux habitants de Ravenne : « Quidam maligni spiritus... » (Ibid., col. 817.) Clearly, this is the manuscript Ewald cites as "Codex Carpentoractensis 213", an erroneous shelfmark going back to the description by Waitz (Berichte p. 208) who had seen the manuscripts in 1837 and cites it as No. 113 (sic), probably the pre-1862 shelfmark:

113. Gregorii Magni epistolae. Beginnt I. 1. in der Mitte (erstes Blatt fehlt) mit den Worten: „cono sedis nostrae intra provinciam etc. geht bis XII. 9. (hier als 290 fortlaufend seit lib. VII. gezählt) - luminaria hisdem preco fidei." Die Bezeichnung der Bücher fehlt; 239 Blätter. Handschrift des 10.-11 . Jahrhunderts; sehr schön, in Folio.

There is no evidence that either Ewald (or Hartmann) ever saw the codex themselves, and Ewald did not yet know the CGM when he published his analysis (Ewald, Studien pp. 445-446) which corrected Waitz in several points:

Codex Carpentoractensis 213. fol. memb. saec. X-XI; sehr schöne Handschrift. Die wesentlich zu modificirenden Angaben über sie entnehme ich dem Archiv VII, 208. Das erste Blatt der Handschrift fehlt; sie beginnt in der Mitte von I, 1. Die Nummern laufen in der zweiten Hälfte der Handschrift ununterbrochen von 1-290 fort; das wäre Indictio I-VII oder nach Büchern, die, wie ausdrücklich bemerkt wird, in der Handschrift nicht bezeichnet sind, Iib. VIII-XIV; wenn nun im Archiv steht "290 Nummern seit lib. VII", so ist dies jedenfalls eine in die Handschrift eingetragene Notiz, welche noch nach der alten Ordnung, wie sie vor den Maurinern üblich war, gegeben ist. Ebenso finden wir eine ganz veraltete Angabe, wenn im Archiv als letzter Brief der Sammlung von Carpentras XII, 9 genannt wird. Hat die zweite Hälfte des Registers sonst 293 Nummern und schliesst in den letzten 4 Nummern mit XIV, 14. XII, 47. X, 22. 23, so muss danach der 290. Brief XIV, 14 sein; XIV, 14 correspondirt aber mit XII, 9 der alten Ordnung vor den Maurinern, und dass nur dieser Brief gemeint sein kann, ergeben die im Archiv angeführten Schlussworte des letzten Briefes, Worte, die ganz im Anfang von XIV, 14 stehen. Wir sehen also, dass die Handschrift nicht nur am Anfang, sondern auch am Ende verstümmelt ist und können vermuthen, dass noch 3 weitere Briefe auf XIV, 14 folgten.

Hartmann, De codicibus p. X later summarized Ewald's account as follows:

Codex Carpentoractensis 213 fol. membr. saec. X.-XI.; folium primum deest; epistulae partis secundae numeris 1-290 enumerantur; librorum numeri non notantur; item ultimae tres epistulae deesse videntur.

Given the shortness of the only account available to him, Ewald's conjectures are remarkably sound. While Waitz did not clearly say that the manuscript contained 391 + 290 letters (as he only discussed the 290 letters forming the second part of R), Ewald rightly concluded that the Carpentras manuscript was a copy of R, not only ρ (= Norberg's e), and rightly derived the lack of three complete letters at the very end.
