Categories for manuscripts by region

Selected Canon Law Collections, ca. 500–1234

The Clavis Wiki uses geograpical regions ("European regions" in the infoboxes) to indicate the orgin of manuscripts and collections. Placing the articles in the respective categories helps to give users a quick overview, and provides machine-readable information which in turn allows to automatcally produce simple statistical analyses and similar features of the wiki.

If you want to place a manuscript in a category indicating the place of origin, please use the map and the list below as a guide. Every article on a manuscript should be in one and only one of the regional categories listed below (see also the map for borders). The individual category pages (e.g. Category:Manuscript from Northern France) will show you which collections are already in the category. To add a manuscript page to the appropriate categories, insert the respective tag (e.g. [[Category:Manuscript from Northern France]]) at the bottom of the page.

The map on the right was created with the Visual Editor in Wikipedia (see https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Benutzer:CRolker/Karte for the original version, with Open Street Map as base map, hence with roads, cities, and modern borders). The goal was to divide the area where Latin canon law collections were produced and copied (most of Western Europe plus northern Africa and the Crusader Kingdoms) into large regions. For this, I have roughly followed the terminology in palaeography, but in many cases terms like "Western France" are used in different ways, so I frequently made ad hoc decisions. Also, drawing the map forced me to define my terminology much more precisely than it is commonly the case in palaeography.

In many cases, I have followed modern administrative borders, so the borders are a compromise between historical meaningful (but often vague) and modern, sometimes anachronistic definitions. Feel free to use the discussion page to make suggestions how to improve the terminology used here.

The regional categories

The most important categories to indicate the place of origin for manuscripts and collections are those referring to regions (the respective parameter in the infoboxes is called "normregion"). Every collection should be in one and only one of the following categories:

  • France and her neighbors
    • [[Category:Manuscript from Western France]] = region Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes.
    • [[Category:Manuscript from Southern France]] = Auvergne-Rhones-Alpes, Provence ..., Languedoc, plus Catalonia and French-speaking Switzerland south of Lake Geneva.
    • [[Category:Manuscript from Eastern France]] = Bourgogne-Franche Comté and Grand Est plus Belgium, Luxembourg and French-speaking Switzerland north of Lake Geneva.
    • [[Category:Manuscript from Northern France]] = the rest, i.e. Brittany, Normandy, Ile de France, Pays-de-la-Loire and Centre-Val-de-Loire.

Every collection should be in one of the regional categores listed above; these in turn are all subcategories of either Category:Manuscript from Northwestern Europe or Category:Manuscript from Southern Europe and Mediterranean. If, exceptionally, it is not possible to place a collection in a regional category, use Category:Collection of which the place of origin is unknown or missing and, if possible, place the collection in either Category:Manuscript from Northwestern Europe or Category:Manuscript from Southern Europe and Mediterranean directly.

More specific (sub-)categories

Feel free to use more specific categories to indicate the place of origin, e.g. [[Category:Manuscript from Bologna]], [[Category:Manuscript from Chartres]], [[Category:Manuscript from Italy]]. Such specific categories should be used in addition to the regional categories listed above. If you create new categories, make sure they do not overlap with existing ones and are sub-categories of one of the thirteen regional categories listed above.
