Irene and Peter Ludwig began to collect art, including medieval manuscript, in the 1950s. Many objects from the collection were given to museums, some were sold at various times.

In 1982 Irene and Peter Ludwig created the foundation today known as Peter und Irene Ludwig Stiftung which today takes care of the collection. In 1983, the Getty Museum bought 144 medieval manuscripts from the collection.
