The Cisterian Abbey of Vyšší Brod (Hohenfurth in German) was founded in the thirteenth century. It was shut down by the Gestapo in 1941. After the war, monks briefly returned before the monastery was dissolved in 1950 and the books given to České Budějovice, Jihočeská vědecká knihovna. In 1959, the Cisterian order united the monastery with Rein („Stift Rein-Hohenfurth“), and in 1989 two monks returned to Vyšší Brod. In 1991, the library was restituted to the newly refounded monastery.
