The library goes back to the Kurfürstliche öffentliche Bibliotheque (est. 1770) and other historical libraries and was called, inter alia, the Landes- und Stadtbibliothek (1904-1970); in 1970 it was given to the newly founded university which in 1988 was renamed Heinrich-Heine-Universität. In 1993 the Universitätsbibliothek became the Universitäts- und Landesbibliothek Düsseldorf or ULB Düsseldorf for short.

The manuscript department holds 423 medieval manuscripts plus fragments. As of late 2025, the Handschriftenportal has not much information on these holding but the ULB announced that this will change soon. In the meantime, there is a separate platform for the digitised manuscripts (here).

There are 5 articles on this Wiki on manuscripts which are held by Düsseldorf, ULB; see Category:Manuscript in Düsseldorf, ULB.
