The Cisterian Abbey of Vyšší Brod (Hohenfurth in German) was founded in the thirteenth century. It was shut down by the German Gestapo in 1941. After the war, monks briefly returned before the monastery was again closed. In 1959, the Cisterian order united the monastery with [[Rein, Stiftsbibliothek|Rein]] („Stift Rein-Hohenfurth“), and in 1989 two monks returned to Vyšší Brod. In 1991, the library was restituted to the newly refounded monastery.
