The library was closed in 1929 due to the bancruptcy of the owner, and apart from a brief period remained closed; many of its holdings were sold from 1929 to 1935, looted during Waorld War II, or confiscated after 1945 by the GDR. In 2019, however, the library was reopened in Hirzenhain, with parts of the historical holdings being restituted from various libraries in the former GDR.
