The collection (named after the provenance of one of the three manuscripts, Paris, BnF, lat. 1451) is dated to the sixth century; according to Mordek, it is from Southern Gaul. It contains mainly conciliar canons but also some decretals. Maassen, Geschichte p. 624 stressed that the Gallic councils found here are different from other collections of such material, while the other contents of the Collectio Sancti Mauri are very similar to the Collectio Quesnelliana. While Maassen held that the similarities are not enough to assume direct dependency, Kéry, Collections p. 45 reported that the use of the Quesnelliana was "likely". Mordek, Kirchenrecht und Reform, pp. 55-56 assumed that the Collectio Vetus Gallica use a collection similiar to, but not identical with, the Collectio Sancti Mauri.
The manuscripts
For manuscripts, see Category:Manuscript of Collectio Sancti Mauri (number of entries: 3).
Baluze in Paris, BnF, Collection Baluze 2, fo. 180r-181v, 183r, and 184r describes the contents of a "Codex Laudunensis"; this manuscript from Laon is today lost. Maassen p. 16 and 22 nn. 2-3 who apparently knew only the Paris manuscript of the Collectio Sancti Mauri, mentions Labbe's description of a (presumably lost) manuscript owned by Claude Hardy containing a collection similar to or identical with this collection.
