Wien, ÖNB, Cod. 1286 (Theol. 387) is a (early?) twelfth-century manuscript of 119 fols. (250 x 170 mm). It consists of 15 quires, which are ordered in the following way: 11 x IV88 + (IV – 1)95 + 3 x IV119. Its quire signatures are unknown as of yet. The manuscript was written in Austria by (at least) two different hands, in ‘Deutsche Bücherminuskel’ according to Hermann. Its dating is either saec. XII1 according to both Kerff and Kéry, or saec. XII according to both Denis and Hermann. It has been in possession of the Austrian Hofbibliothek since 1576, based on Hugo Blotius’ signature on fol. 119v (based on Hermann). His successor, Sebastian Tengnagel, also left his signature on fol. 1r (based on Kerff).

Contents

The manuscript contains exclusively canon law material, specifically the complete canonical collection Quadripartitus. It is one of only three witnesses transmitting a complete version of this collection. Striking here is that the Quadripartitus was originally compiled in the (middle of the) ninth century, indicating that the collection was still being studied and, possibly, actively used close to three centuries later.

Not much else is known about the manuscript, as it has seen little study and has not been digitized (yet).
