Burchard abbreviation

The Liber decretorum of Burchard of Worms was widely spread in Western Europe. Like other popular collections, it was often used as the basis (or kernel) of other collections. Some of them still contain long series of Burchardian canons, but due to additions, omissions, rearrangement, and other structural differences, these works are distinct collections of canon law, which thus have their own entries in this Wiki (e.g. the Collectio XX librorum in Vat. lat. 1350 and the Collectio XVII librorum).

However, there also are a number of Burchard abbreviations - collections that are much more similar to the Liber decretorum, retaining the sequence of the materials and adding little if any non-Burchardian materials. These works, which sometimes look very similiar to an incomplete copy of Burchard, are treated collectively in this Wiki - distinct from the Liber decretorum, but not as separate canonical collections.
